Locals Push Ban for Pipis

For those 4WDers that don’t mind dropping a rod in when you’re out beach driving, the rules on collecting pipis may change for those recreational fishermen in Victoria.

Locals in South Gippsland are worried that many people that come to collect pipis for bait are taking advantage of bag limits.

In an interview on ABC local radio, Beverley Walker of the ‘Friends of Venus Bay Community Group’ wants to know how the government authority plans to monitor pipi collection. “Only last holiday there were eight fishery inspectors across the state of Victoria,” Beverley said.

“The adult pipi is seriously in decline … we observed a young gentlemen who said his collection was three litres when the bag limit is two,” she said.

“We encourage every Victorian to get out and experience the outdoors, but there is always a risk of people who do the wrong thing,” Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Anthony Hurst said.

So get out and explore the outdoors and all the amazing beach locations, but be aware of bag limits for both pipis and fish species so you can leave some for next time.

What’s the best 4WD destination to drop a line in?
